For sale is a Very Rare Rolex “Texano” Ref. 5100 in 18k Yellow Gold with a limited production of only 1000 pieces.

The Rolex 5100 is one of the brand's most obscure and fascinating models, produced in a limited quantity of 1000 pieces from 1970 to 1972. It holds the distinction of being the first quartz-powered Rolex ever, predating the more widely known Rolex OysterQuartz by seven years.

The development of the Rolex 5100 can be traced back to the early 1960s when Japan and Switzerland were racing to develop the world's first quartz wristwatch. In response to this, Rolex, along with 20 other Swiss watchmakers, formed the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH) in 1962. Their goal was to create the first Swiss-made quartz movement. After a few years of development, the Beta-21 movement was finalized in 1969, and Rolex launched its quartz-powered model, the 5100, in 1970.

The Rolex 5100 was not just a technological marvel; it also introduced several firsts for the brand: it was the first Rolex with a sapphire crystal, and it featured a quickset date function. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive watch in the Rolex catalog. Only 1,000 pieces were produced, its design was unconventional for Rolex, featuring an integrated bracelet and a 39mm case to house the large Beta-21 movement.

The watch was designed to appeal to a more modern, forward-thinking audience and looked unlike any other traditional Rolex models of the time.

Upon its debut at BaselWorld in 1970, the Rolex 5100 was an immediate success. It sold out before the official launch, drawing attention for its avant-garde design and exclusivity. Owners of the 5100 were invited to join the Rolex Quartz Club, an elite group that enjoyed private events and special tours of Rolex’s headquarters.

Given its rarity and unique design, the Rolex 5100 has become a collector’s item. Its value has risen over time, especially among those who appreciate vintage and unconventional Rolex models.
