For sale is a Vintage Rolex Datejust 36mm ‘Ovettone’ Ref. 6075 from 1948 in solid 18k yellow gold.
The name "Ovettone" (meaning "big egg" in Italian) comes from its round, bulbous case shape that resembles an egg, which makes it stand out from the more traditional and angular cases that Rolex is known for. The case of the 6075 is larger and has a unique, almost cushion-like form.
The cream dial features a clean, minimalist design with applied arrow hour markers and dauphine hands. The Date window at 3 O’clock features red numbers and an applied gold border. The 6075 marks the last time Rolex would omit the ‘Datejust’ text from the dial, all subsequent models included the ‘Datejust’ on the dial.
The domed acrylic crystal is surrounded by a coin-edge bezel, another staple of the 40s/50s era. It features a textured, raised edge with small, sharp ridges that resemble the edge of a coin, hence the name "coin edge." This bezel was eventually replaced by the more commonly know fluted bezel.
Both the dial and the clasp feature a half-crown coronet logo which was used on some models during this era, making this example an appealing consideration for vintage lovers.
The case is paired with the iconic Jubilee bracelet with a box clasp. The bracelet shows stretching which can be expected for a watch of this age, nevertheless it is still very wearable and looks great on the wrist deapite the signs of wear.
As with many Rolex vintage models, the 6075 Datejust Ovettone holds great collectibility due to its age, design, and connection to Rolex's early history. Collectors and enthusiasts value these early Datejust models for their unique features and limited production runs. The Ovettone is even more sought after because it’s relatively rare compared to other Datejust references.
